Torrential rain causes flood in Kani Township, Sagaing Region KALAY- Due to torrential rain, plantations, dams and roads were destroyed in Kani Township, Sagaing Region. Moreover, it caused the bank erosion. “Many plantations and roads are being flooded. Parhe village is still collecting the damaged lists. This year, some parts which never face the flooding are inundated. Southern Parhe village is being flooded. Moreover, the rain flooded Onion, Sesame and Bean plantations. Parhe creek is flooded due to heavy rain so also embankments are broken down. Some villages aren’t phoning while raining,” said MP Tun Tun Win from Kani Township. Furthermore, Parhe creek in Kani Township had swollen and flooded nearby areas yesterday morning. “We have to face torrent rain yearly. But, this year torrent rain is very worst. About 40 houses and paddy strains were flooded. Our cattle are being evacuated to safer places. Six motorbikes were swamped. Rain started from around 11pm of June 5th to yesterday morning. That’s why we can’t control the overflow of water. In our village, there are around 200 houses. At present, we can’t look at the plantations. But, we inspect the damage of roads and gutters. I think plantations will be flooded. At present, no vehicles can drive because roads were seriously damaged. The heavy rain had made the roads very muddy and mountain stream. It is raining about 8 days. Some farmers lost their paddy strains,” said Ahe Myint from Kani Township. Likewise, torrential rain has flooded some wards in Namptlan village, Thibaw Township, northern Shan State. Although Namptlan village had never seen the flooding in the past, the flooding frequently occurs in the village due to forest depletion, according to the locals. “Torrent rain had overflowed on the Mandalay-Lashio Union Highway near Kyaukme Township. We ordered the drivers to pass through the Union Highway systematically aiming to avoid the danger. However, a vehicle fell into the road side avoiding another car. There was no injury. Now, water decreases on the Union Highway,” said Thet Swe from Oriental Highway in Kyaukme Township. Flood has occurred in northern Shan State after continuous downpours and overflowing the torrent rain. --------------- Flooding had destroyed crops of nearly 70,000 acres

Hundreds of local households have been told to evacuate. But many residents are staying in their houses because they have nowhere to go. “The landslides in the Mekong Delta no longer follow natural law. We need to give warnings about this to people,” said Duong Van Ni from the Can Tho University. In early May, the leaders of 13 provinces in Mekong Delta met to hear reports about landslides that are threatening the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) reported that riverbank landslide and coastal erosion in the Mekong Delta has increased in both sphere and scale. Currently, there are 562 riverbank and coast positions suffering from landslides, with a total length of 786 kilometers. These include 42 dangerous landslide positions with total length of 149 kilometers which need urgent treatment to ensure safety for people’s lives and properties. It is estimated that VND6.990 trillion is needed to build embankments and dykes and remove people from erosion-stricken areas. In general, a huge amount of capital is needed to implement the program ‘living with floods’, ‘living with salinity’, and ‘living with landslides’ in the country’s rice, fruit and seafood granary. After the conference, the PM agreed to allocate VND1.5 trillion from the state budget to the Mekong Delta to treat the landslide areas. Experts have advised local authorities and residents to be more cautious when building houses along canals and rivers. Despite the large-scale landslides, people still like building houses on riverbanks. Nearly all the bustling markets and urban areas in Mekong Delta are located near rivers, from Can Tho to Long Xuyen, from Vinh Long to Vi Thanh. Because of the tradition of setting up houses near roads and rivers, Mekong Delta has had to pay a heavy price. Trillions of dong worth of houses and people’s lives have been lost because of landslides and rising water levels. It is estimated that thousands of houses in coastal areas and along riverbanks have disappeared in the last 10 years. Most recently, seven houses fell into the river in a landslide in O Mon on May 21, while 14 other houses partially collapsed. The accident caused damages worth VND30 billion. ---------------------- Vietnam’s Disaster Management Authority (DMA) reported on 05 June, 2018, that at least 1 person has died and several houses damaged or destroyed by flash floods and landslides triggered by rain over the last few days. Heavy rain has been falling in the country since 02 June, some as a result of Tropical Cyclone Ewinar (previously Tropical Depression 05W). Tra Khuc in Quang Ngai province recorded 205 mm between 02 and 05 June, 2018. In 24 hours between 04 and 05 June Lang Chanh in Thanh Hoa province recorded 100 mm of rain. DMA said that 1 person died and another was injured in a landslide in Quan Son district in Thanh Hoa Province. Five houses have been damaged by landslides (3 in Lao Cai and 2 in Thanh Hoa). Two houses were washed away by flooding in Cao Bang. Crops have also been damaged in Cao Bang and Lao Cai. Elsewhere in the country, recent heavy rainfall has caused flooding in Thua Thien Hue, Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai and Phu Yen provinces, damaging 3,826 hectares of rice crops.
