On 08 January 2026, a landfill landslide incident occurred at the staff house and
office of Prime Waste Inc., located within the Binaliw Landfill in Brgy. Binaliw, City of
Cebu. The incident led to the collapse of structures and reports of several individuals
being trapped. According to preliminary reports from the Cebu City Operations
Center, at least twenty (20) individuals were initially believed to be trapped under the
rubble as of around 7:35 PM. Initial search, rescue, and retrieval (SRR) operations
resulted in the extrication of seven (7) individuals.
On 09 January 2026, continuing SRR operations led to the extrication of an
additional twelve (12) individuals. Three (3) fatalities were confirmed, while thirty-five
(35) individuals remained missing. Of those extricated, seven (7) were transported to
the Visayas Medical Center and five (5) to North General Hospital.
On 12 January 2026, SRR operations were ongoing, with twelve (12) individuals
rescued, twenty-eight (28) persons still missing, twelve (12) injured individuals, and
eight (8) confirmed fatalities.
On 21 January 2026, SRR operations at the Binaliw Landfill were concluded, with all
reported missing persons successfully recovered.
In response, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), through
its Field Office VII, together with the Local Government Unit of the City of Cebu,
provided relief assistance aimed at addressing the immediate interventions of the
affected individuals.
