Philippines, Effect of Typhoon HAIMA (Lawin)

Tropical Cyclone Haima (Lawin) made its landfall in Peñablanca, Cagayan Province (17.6°N,122.2°E) on 19 October at around 11:00 PM local time as a Category 4 typhoon with maximum sustained winds of up to 225 kph and wind gusts up to 315 kph. After sweeping through northern part of Luzon island, the westward-moving typhoon has weakened and exited the Philippines’ landmass by 20 October 2016 morning. By 10:00 PM of the same day, the typhoon exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and all levels of the Tropical Cyclone Warning Systems (TCWS) were lifted. The brunt of the typhoon’s impact is felt in agriculture and infrastructure where the approximate cost of damages wrought by the typhoon amounts to around USD 52.4M. Based on the NDRRMC Situation Report No. 07 dated 24 October 2016, the typhoon’s other impacts are: IMPACT - 12 (twelve) deaths. - 46,257 houses damaged (6,551 totally / 39,706 partially) in Regions I, II, III, and CAR. - An estimated total of 158,863 persons were served inside and outside evacuation centres. - 64 barangays (villages) were reported flooded in the Provinces of Pangasinan (Region I) and in the Provinces of Bataan and Pampanga (Region III). 87 road sections and 19 bridges are still not passable in Regions I, II, III and CAR with the Public works and local government units continuously clearing the road blockages. The most affected provinces are Cagayan and Isabela in Region I, Kalinga in CAR, and Pampanga and Tarlac in Region III due to flooding. Power is already restored in La Union and Baguio City. The Province of Kalinga (CAR), one of the worst affected in terms of power and communication will take time to recover. Generally, the affected areas are gradually restoring its power and communication lines. The President has also visited Tuguegarao, Cagayan and Iligan, Isabela.
