The presence of Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ)/Easterlies affecting Mindanao
has brought light to moderate rains and thunderstorm in some parts of the Mindanao. The
region is prone to flooding due to its geographical location and the impact of climate
change. The region's topography, characterized by low-lying coastal areas and numerous
rivers, makes it susceptible to heavy rainfall and landslides.
On March 22, 2025, the Province of Maguindanao del Sur experienced light to moderate
rain showers accompanied by strong winds impacting some of its municipalities due to
the current weather systems Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ)/Easterlies affecting
Mindanao on about 4 o’clock in the afternoon. The severe weather caused destruction of
houses, toppled or uprooted trees, and some affected municipalities experienced
temporary power outages.
Further, on 23 March 2025 at around 9:00am, the PDRA Analyst Group of BARMM
convened for a PDRA meeting. As a result of PDRA Meeting, ALPHA EPR protocol was
activated in the Region based on the Risk Matrix. The Probability of Rating for the ITCZ
Track is more than 2 provinces exposed namely Lanao del Sur, Tawi-Tawi and Basilan.
For flood about 2 Provinces exposed which is Lanao del Sur and Basilan and 1 province
is exposed to landslide. With this, concerned agencies recommend intense monitoring to
affected areas.
