Observations on the causes and effects of a peat landslide involving a segment of a peat swamp that slid into the Tutoh tributary of the Baram river in May 1961 suggest that low-gradient peat landslides may have been responsible for many of the features found in washouts in coal seams that are generally interpreted as due to the action of streams eroding a channel through the original peat swamp.
