Description

A building collapsed under the weight of soil due to landslide in Moegok. A landslide killed five and destroyed four houses as a result of continuous raining in Moegok, Mandalay Region and Northern Shan State. Continuous rainfall which started on June 10th caused a landslide in Namhsan Township, Palaung Self-administered zone of northern Shan State. Monastic buildings were also damaged. “Heavy rain pours in Namhsan Township since the beginning of June 10th. Some houses built on mountainside collapsed as well as earthen walls in monasteries broke down. New houses were damaged due to the landside. Seven buildings were completely destroyed,” said residents from Namhsan Township. Likewise, locals already faced transportation access because landslide occurred on Namhsan-Hsipaw road and Namhsan-Mongton road which are main roads linking to the Namhsan Township. However, authorities are now ready to remove the blockage by using heavy machinery. Similarly, due to continuous heavy rain started yesterday morning, landslide took place in Aungthitlwin Ward, Moegok Township (west) leaving three houses collapsed and five dead, according to the Fire Services Department in Moegok Township. “Landslide occurred in Mindata Ward, Moegok Township, (east), around 2am of June 14th. Four were injured. Myat Saydana Social Welfare Team rescued and sent them to the hospital. Likewise, heavy rain caused the landslide in Aungthitlwin Ward killing five people including one visitor. At present, we don’t inquire them. Due to the landslide, cracks began to appear on the platform of Phaungdaw Oo pagoda. Now, pilgrims are prohibited from paying homage to pagoda. During these days, it is worried about the landslide in Moegok Township. If people heed our warning of the landslide, they will be free from danger. Landslide may occur in two places. So, we ordered the house owners to move their houses to safer places,” said Fire Brigade member Saw Kyaw Naing aka Ko Thar Gyi. “Landslide took place in early morning of June 14th. Three houses being built on mountainside collapsed due to landslide. Before the accident, ward authorities warned the house owners against the landslide. Among five houses, two followed our warning. In the remaining house, five family members including one guest died from landslide. The collapsed houses are huts. We already sent all bodies to the hospital. The Red Cross, Social Welfare Associations and respective authorities helped in the accident,” said Win Oo, a member of Moegok Townsip Development Committee.
