Description
Nearly 500 homes were damaged and a father and son injured during severe winds and heavy rains in Kampong Cham province’s Batheay district on Saturday. Duong Nha, Batheay district deputy police chief, said the storm damaged 496 homes in San Dek and Trorp communes. Of those, 20 homes were completely destroyed, while the rest suffered structural damage. “Storms flattened 20 homes across two communes and injured a father and son,” Nha said. He said about 200 officials from the district and provincial halls visited the affected communes to distribute supplies. Sam Nal, Batheay district police chief, said they could not evaluate the total cost of the damage as they were busy helping villagers. National Committee for Disaster Management spokesman Keo Vy said a total of 107 storms have occurred nationwide in the first five months of the year, including the one in Kampong Cham. He said storms destroyed 471 homes across the country, while 1,807 others were damaged. Schools have also been affected, with the roofs of 17 destroyed. The storms have so far killed three people and injured 29. Vy added that lighting strikes have killed 65 people and injured 46 others, in addition to killing 69 head of cattle and destroying 11 homes.
