A powerful flood swept through a village in northern Bali, destroying two out of three existing bridges, while a landslide blocked the main highway connecting the coastal regency Buleleng with the island’s capital Denpasar.

No fatalities were reported in either incident.

The landslide occurred on Tuesday at Wanagiri, a hilly village bordering Bedugul, the lakeside tourism destination famous for its cool weather, majestic scenery and the island’s largest botanical garden and forest reserve.

“It occurred at Kilometer 21 near Gitgit along the Denpasar–Singaraja highway,” said Denpasar traffic police chief Comr. Bima Aria Viyasa, who monitored the incident.

A flood and landslide ripped through Belandingan village in Kintamani, Bangli, 60 kilometers northeast of Denpasar, Bali, on Tuesday evening, claiming at least six lives.

“Six bodies were found in two separate locations devastated by the calamity; Belandingan village and Pinggan village,” Bali Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) acting head Dewa Made Indra was quoted as saying by Antara on Wednesday.

Dewa said that the joint search and rescue team from the administration found it difficult to reach the affected areas as the access roads were impassable.

“Mounds of soil and uprooted trees completely blocked our attempts to reach the location,” Made Indra said.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported later that the joint rescue team eventually managed to pass through the access road to the location at 1 p.m. local time on Wednesday.

“We discovered 14 landslides, eight of which blocked the access road,” BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.
