More than 100 people from 50 families in Manjoi and Buntong here have been evacuated to higher ground today when flash floods hit Ipoh city following continuous rainfall since midnight. The residents, from Kampung Dato Ahmad Said, Kampung Tengku Hussein and Kampung Manjoi, were evacuated to the relief centres at Sekolah Agama Rakyat Tengku Hussein and Kampung Manjoi community hall. Perak Menteri Besar Perak Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, who visited the areas affected by the floods today, said heavy rain since last night caused the water in several rivers, including Sungai Pari and Sungai Tapah, to overflow its banks and spilled to the villages. He said he had asked the State Security Council and other government agencies to provide the necessary assistance, including to supply food and other essential items, to the victims immediately. “The relevant authorities should also take immediate steps to repair roads that are damaged in the floods,” he added. The state government, he said, would also allocate some fund to help the victims, especially for repair of their houses.
